KIbale National Park features on Uganda's safari tourist trail as being one of the best places to go for an unforgettable chimpanzee encounter. Situated in Western Uganda, the Park is 766 square km in size, and protects a lush tropical rainforest, which is home to over 1,000 chimps. As well as chimps, the forest is home to 12 other primate species such as the endangered red Colobus monkeys, black and white Colobus monkeys, blue monkey, L'Hoest's monkeys and the endemic Uganda Mangabay. In addition, elusive forest elephants and leopards can sometimes be seen, as well as giant forest hogs, several different antelope species and buffalo.

The Park is also home to 325 bird species. Guided morning or afternoon walks into the forest, which start from the Park's Visitor Centre, set off to trek the habituated family groups. Visitors are put into groups of just 6, and the experience usually lasts for 3-4 hours. Once you find the chimpanzees, you will spend approximately an hour watching them playing and feeding, but you must maintain a distance of 7-8m from the chimps at all times. Unlike their cousins, the gorillas, chimpanzees tend to be more active and often keep moving through the forest canopies, so you may find yourself following a troop through the dense jungle.

After an early breakfast, head to the park headquarters for a briefing before venturing into the forest in search of chimpanzees. Led by an experienced ranger, your trek may take 1 to 4 hours depending on the troop’s location. Once found, you’ll spend a magical hour observing them in their natural habitat—watching them play, feed, and communicate.

In the afternoon, immerse yourself in the local culture through a guided village walk. Highlights include visits to a traditional healer, coffee plantation, and basket weaving demonstrations. Wrap up the day with a tasting of locally brewed banana beer and gin.

After breakfast, embark on a scenic journey southwest to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (approx. 7 hours). The drive offers stunning views of Uganda’s terraced hillsides, vibrant villages, and serene countryside. Upon arrival, check into your lodge nestled on the edge of the ancient rainforest and prepare for the next day’s gorilla trekking adventure.

Home also to monkeys, chimpanzees and countless butterflies and forest birds, this pocket of primeval forest is one of the most biologically diverse areas on Earth and has been designated a World Heritage Site.

When not out trekking through the forests of Bwindi on search for gorillas, enjoy the activities and facilities available at and from the lodge. Enjoy a tour of the tea plantation, take a stroll to the river below the lodge or head out on a hike on the Munyanga River trail or to a nearby waterfall. Spend some time at the spa for a rejuvenating treatment, followed by a local beverage from the Bwindi Bar.

Rise early for your once-in-a-lifetime gorilla trekking experience. After a briefing at park headquarters, join your guides and trackers for a trek into the dense, misty rainforest. Trekking can take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours depending on gorilla movement, but the reward is unforgettable—one full hour in the presence of a mountain gorilla family, witnessing their gentle interactions and familial bonds.

In the afternoon, enjoy an enriching cultural experience with the Batwa community—indigenous forest dwellers known as the "Keepers of the Forest." You’ll learn about their traditional forest-based lifestyles, music, storytelling, and survival skills in an authentic, respectful setting

After breakfast, begin the scenic return drive to Entebbe (approx. 10 hours), stopping at notable landmarks and for lunch en route. Depending on your flight schedule, you’ll either be transferred directly to the airport or to a hotel for freshening up before departure. Depart Uganda with a heart full of unforgettable memories and a deep appreciation for its primates and people.
