This diverse park can be explored in multiple ways—by vehicle, on foot, and by boat—offering visitors a chance to see a wide variety of animals and birdlife.
Further south lies the legendary Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Trekking through the dense jungle to observe these magnificent primates in their natural habitat is a truly life-changing experience, with a 90% success rate in finding them. Beyond gorilla encounters, the forest is home to several other primate species, making it an ideal location for nature lovers. For a more immersive experience, visitors can also explore the forest with the Batwa people, gaining insight into their deep connection with this ancient ecosystem. Due to the limited availability of gorilla trekking permits, early planning is essential.

Wildlife and Adventure Beyond the Gorillas
Continuing the journey westward, Kibale National Park offers incredible opportunities for chimpanzee trekking. Home to one of Africa’s largest chimp populations, this park provides an intimate look at these intelligent and social primates. The nearby Rwenzori Mountains, often called the "Mountains of the Moon," create a stunning backdrop of rugged peaks and verdant forests.
Heading north to the shores of Lake Albert, travelers can follow the path of the Victoria Nile, a tributary of the great Nile River. This region is home to Murchison Falls National Park, one of Uganda’s largest and most historic conservation areas. The park is known for its breathtaking waterfall, where the Nile forces its way through a narrow gorge before plunging into the river below. It is also home to diverse wildlife, including the rare Rothschild’s giraffe, a close relative of the Nubian giraffe. The nearby Budongo Forest is another highlight, offering excellent opportunities for chimp trekking.
Uganda Safari Seasons
The "regular" or "dry" safari season in East Africa generally offers optimal game viewing due to reduced rainfall and vegetation, making it easier to spot wildlife. These months offer a balance between lower prices, fewer tourists, and decent game viewing.
Animals are concentrated around water, vegetation is low and sparse, and predators are circling. But at this time of year, the famous wildebeest migration is in Tanzania’s Serengeti, moving southwards following the end of year rains. Witness the Serengeti dramatic birthing season: it’s one of the best times to watch predator/prey interaction.
It’s green because it’s wet. This is the time of the ‘Long Rains’ and some of the more remote and wild reserves in East Africa are worth avoiding; accommodations may be closed anyway. Gorilla trekking becomes more difficult, and in Kenya and Tanzania’s reserves, wildlife tends to disperse across wider areas, making animals more difficult to see.
Jinja: Uganda’s Thrill-Seeker’s Paradise
For those seeking adventure, a trip to Jinja is a must. Located east of Kampala, this lively town is known as Uganda’s adrenaline capital. Visitors can experience thrilling activities such as white-water rafting on the Nile, bungee jumping, mountain biking, and hiking. Jinja also has a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for leisurely strolls through town, browsing local markets, or enjoying a coffee in one of its charming cafes.
